Nas and Escobar Cigars

Nas is a co-owner and equity partner in Escobar Cigars.

The brand, developed by Puros Privados, launched approximately three years ago.

Escobar cigars offer two lines.

The Escobar Natural and Escobar Maduro.

The brand's co-founder David Gomes produces both these cigars at the Escobar Factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

The rapper, Nas, used Escobar in a 1997 track called Escobar '97. He has an affinity for cigars and the romanticized bad-boy images of Escobar.

In Nas's words:

"When the Escobar Cigars team approached me, I admired the brand's exceptional product quality. I am honoured to be an equity partner with Escobar. The goal will be to grow the brand and give back to Nicaragua's local communities. Most of the Escobar tobacco grows ages and gets hand-rolled in Nicaragua."

With the new partnership came a rebranding and a new company logo.

Nas and the Escobar teams have a plan for an aged cigar range. Watch out for the Escobar Ultra Black. That cigar shares its name with a 2020 song by Nas. King's Disease is a song from his album, which won a Grammy in 2021 for Best Rap Album.

Why a Corona sized Cigars offer so much flavour

The Corona is a classic size and shaped cigar. Coronas vary from 5.5 to 6 inches long with a 42 to 46-ring gauge. Many cigar makers blend their cigars around the Corona format.

A corona cigar offers peak flavours. Why?

It is all due to the ratio between the binder, filler, and wrapper tobaccos.

A Corona cigar has less filler tobacco enhancing the wrapper flavours. A Corona cigar is a faster smoke compared to the bigger sizes but packed with flavour.

A blender will often strive to reach the optimal flavours in a Corona cigar. They then use that to adjust the ratios of tobacco in the blend to create the bigger cigars in the range. Smoking a brand's Corona cigar will reward you with optimal flavours and smoothness.

How does the Length and thickness of a cigar influence your smoking experience?

How does the Length and thickness of a cigar influence your smoking experience?

What do shape and format have to do with the taste of a cigar? Each cigar is unique. Every cigar's aroma and strength depend on the blend ratio of the filler tobacco. The proportion of Volado, Seco and Ligero leaves influences the flavour and strength.

Smaller cigars have compact but often less complex flavours.

Cigars with a larger ring gauge burn slower and have a larger smoke volume. That can help to increase the variety of flavours and intensity.

Corona

The Corona-sized cigar was the most popular cigar format for years. Every Corona combines elegant and robust flavours.

These smaller-sized cigars offer a balanced smoke volume and aroma development. And if you are a Corona cigar connoisseur, the word is flavour.

However, Robusto stole the limelight.

Robusto

Today the Robusto takes centre stage. Robusto's is a favourite cigar size among many cigar smokers. Always a personal cigar size choice. Robustos are thicker than Coronas and produce more voluminous smoke and aroma. The flavour part is personal.

What is your favourite size cigar to smoke? I have enjoyed a few big gauge cigars and some with fuller strength, but I always tend to reach for a Corona.

I enjoy a Corona-sized cigar. A Corona always delivers a beautiful creamy puff with loads of smooth, rich flavours. It's a cigar you feel comfortable lighting any time of the day.

Of course, a Robusto makes part of my humidor, and so do other sizes. But, when I travel and decide on a cigar to take with me, I will always choose the Coroa's.

Let's look into the Escobar Double Corona characteristics.

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Dry Aroma

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Dry Aroma

The cigar has a closed foot but releases punchy, rich aromas with moisture.

I picked up the following from the dry aroma:

Caramel

Toffee

Light pepper spice

Rich tobacco scents

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Dry Draw

The dry draw is light and easy, with a slight firmness on the draw. The dry draw has a prominent spicy tingle on the lips.

Rich aged tobacco

Cured meat flavours

Subtle white pepper spice

Caramel and Toffee sweetness

Escobar Double Corona Cigar First Puff

The smoke volume is medium as you light the cigar. The Corona cigar does not release volumes of smoke but rewards you with immediate flavour. Sometimes bigger cigars take a moment longer to release more flavour. Not the Corona. The flavours are present from the start delivering an easy, smooth, creamy puff with subtle flavour combinations.

It's an easy, smooth smoke that will pair with anything from tea, coffee, and non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. I would recommend keeping the drinks milder not to overpower the Corona flavours.

Escobar Double Corona Cigar and Ginger Beer

The ginger beer has a bubbly sweetness with crisp freshness. I love pairing ginger beer with a cigar.

The combination never fails to deliver creamy caramel sweetness with an earthy toastiness.

The cigar's toasty flavours blend perfectly with the caramel and ginger tastes lingering on the palate.

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Apple Cider

Apple cider and a cigar.

The apple cider has a sweetness that pair well with the toasty spiciness of the cigar. It is a refreshing drink on a hot summer's day.

The caramel tastes fade as the cider replaces more earthy flavours paired with the cigar. The light apple and fruit flavours blend with the meaty toffee and light spice in the Corona cigar.

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Red Wine

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Red Wine

This pairing, I decided to pair a very light, easy-drinking red wine. The wine is ideal for warm summer nights with low alcohol and light tannins.

Pairing a Corona cigar with a big bold red wine could work. It all depends on the cigar brand, blend and wine.

Generally, a Corona cigar matches better with smoother, lighter drinks. But if you light up a full-bodied Maduro Corona, the cigar will hold up with fuller wines and spirit drinks.

The ideal is to match a drink that will enhance your cigar.

Escobar Double Corona Cigar Pairing conclusion

The Corona has a smooth burn from start to finish. I smoke slow and never had to correct the burn or relight.

It is a wonderful cigar.

The draw is light and consistent, delivering delicious flavours with every puff.

The only problem with this cigar is that the humidor stock won't last. Toasty and creamy with a tingle of spice makes the Escobar Double Corona an incredible cigar to stock up on.

The red wine offered the best flavours of the three drinks to complement the Escobar Corona.

The wine is light with subtle dry, earthy tannins and a mouthful of juicy plum sweetness.

The red wine has hints of strawberries that ad a slight sweetness to pair with the cigars pepper spice.

The wine coats your palate. Nothing wrong with enjoying a bacon breakfast, cured meat snacks or a creamy pasta dish before lighting up the Corona. A meal is a good palate coating before lighting a toasty flavourful cigar.

The red wine lifts the cigar's caramel and toffee flavours. It is an easy, balanced pairing to enjoy on a humid summer night.

I made no secret of how much I enjoy lighting up Corona-sized cigars. The Escobar Double Corona flavours deliver and develop subtle, smooth flavours with each draw. The cigar stayed consistent without a bitter or gritty finish.

To enjoy a cigar for breakfast, lunch or dinner, the Escobar Double Corona is box worthy.
